Writing for Boys

Creative Escape & Connection
Creative writing program for 6th-9th grade boys

Middle school brings unique challenges, and our middle school program meets the needs of students in the midst of this formative time. TIWP creates a supportive environment for students to escape into the creative writing process, where they can be playful and find joy in the stories and worlds they create. We also provide a safe space for students to address the challenges they may be facing through the writing process. Teachers encourage and model authenticity, peer support, and self confidence. Each session involves an inspirational reading, a writing prompt, and time to share and receive feedback.

As with all our programs, we use the Amherst Writing Method, a methodology rooted in the belief that everyone is a writer, all feedback is focused on the strengths of the writer, and our unique writing voice will continually grow clearer and stronger, the more it is expressed and encouraged. To ensure that each student gets personalized attention and mentoring, TIWP accepts a maximum of 6 students per class.

Instructors:  Melissa Quiter or Gretchen Cion

  • Enrollment occurs quarterly (our schedule is based on the Acalanes District academic calendar) but tuition is pro-rated depending on the day you register. Because we depend upon tuition to run and sustain our org, we cannot offer refunds once the quarter is underway. That said, if your child doesn't absolutely love their first class, just let us know and we can provide a full refund up to 5 days after the first class. We want your child to choose writing purely for the joy of it!

  • Private and homeschooling classes available upon request.

  • See Tuition page for details.

The Courage to Write

Creative writing program for high school boys

In this writing program, boys will learn how to tell their story and speak their truth, developing their own voice as both writers and leaders. In addition to teaching the principles of effective storytelling—talking about The Hero’s Journey, character development and overcoming obstacles—boys will learn how to tell their story in a strong, authentic way. The more easily boys are able to communicate, the more successful they will be in all areas of their lives. This kind of writing is particularly effective preparation for college application essays.
